Dak Prescott updates Cowboys’ process implementing Mike McCarthy’s play-calling

Dallas has a new OC this season, but it will be the HC calling plays on the sideline.

FRISCO — Changing play-callers brings a blend of new challenges and ideas to an offense.

For Dak Prescott, this offseason and upcoming training camp is about making those adjustments and creating an identity for the Dallas Cowboys offensively.

Kellen Moore was replaced as offensive coordinator in January by Brian Schottenheimer, but head coach Mike McCarthy will be the one calling plays.

McCarthy won a Super Bowl in that role with the Green Bay Packers, but left play-calling duties with Moore his first three years in Dallas.

That decision was made to keep things familiar and comfortable for Prescott and the Cowboys offense, but now entering the 2023 season, a change is coming.

“When you switch play-callers, a big point of that is you’ve got to get into the season, before Game 1, know who you are and what you want to do and how you want to attack the defense,” Prescott said Saturday at his annual youth camp at The Star.

This offseason has created an opportunity for those principles and ideas to be put in place, but training camp will be an important opportunity for them to tie everything together, Prescott said.

The “Texas Coast,” the name given to the new offense by the Dallas quarterbacks, was described by Prescott earlier in the offseason as having West Coast principles, but “has a little bit of what we’ve done in the past.”

Prescott welcomes the change, and credited how McCarthy and the coaching staff have introduced the offense to him and the team.

“He’s done a great job in the spring and the offseason of getting an idea, but we’ve got to make sure we really button it in and define it once we finish with camp,” Prescott said.

Prescott wouldn’t get into specifics about changes to the offense, but said they were working on mending together McCarthy’s aggressiveness with the West Coast background.

In terms of reps and implementation, outside of camp practices, Prescott didn’t give a clear answer on how much he expects to play in the preseason.

“I’m always down for playing, always down for getting the reps,” Prescott said.

“I’m going off their schedule. If I get action in the preseason, I’ll be all for it and if I don’t, I’ll make sure I’m preparing and getting those reps in practice.”
