Dallas Mavericks waive veteran center JaVale McGee

After Dallas’ move, McGee is reportedly receiving interest from the Sacramento Kings.

The Mavericks are officially moving on from center JaVale McGee.

McGee, 35, played only 42 games for the Mavericks during the 2022-23 season, averaging 4.4 points and 2.5 rebounds in 8.5 minutes a night. The Athletic’s Shams Charania first reported that the team was planning to stretch-and-waive McGee, who signed a three-year, $17.2 million contract last July. The team made the move official Tuesday.

The McGee move creates an open roster spot for the upcoming campaign. According to Charania, Dallas plans to re-sign unrestricted free agent Markieff Morris to a new deal.

Morris, 33, was acquired last season as a part of the blockbuster Kyrie Irving trade.

This was McGee’s second stint in Dallas. He previously spent the 2015-16 season with the Mavericks, where he averaged 5.1 points and 3.9 rebounds.

After the move, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that the Sacramento Kings are interested in signing McGee. Sacramento would become his ninth NBA team. He previously suited up for Washington, Golden State, Denver, Phoenix, Cleveland, Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Lakers.
