Week 3 Dallas-area high school football rankings: Big movement in 6A; area powers drop

Highland Park, North Crowley, Allen, Arlington Martin and Cedar Hill all made notable moves in the 6A poll, though not all for the better.

The second week of the 2023 high school football season is in the books, which means it’s time for the latest SportsDayHS rankings, as voted on by staff writers and editors.

The top team in their 6A and 5A ballots received 20 points, the second received 19 and so on. The top teams in Class 4A received five points, and private schools received 10 points. The totals were tallied, and we ranked each team by its composite score.

This week’s voters: Lia Assimakopoulos, Tommy Magelssen, Greg, McKenna, Greg Riddle and Demetrio Teniente.

Dropped out: 13. Arlington Martin, 17. Euless Trinity, 19. Hebron

Notable: There was big movement at the top of the poll this week, with two top-five teams losing: Highland Park beat Lewisville 21-18 and Aledo beat Denton Guyer 48-45. Both games had the atmosphere of playoff games, even though it’s just Week 2. Elsewhere, area powers Allen and Arlington Martin have fallen on hard times, both moving to 0-2 ahead of their clash this week. Jesuit beat Rockwall 60-59 in an instant classic, forcing voters to reconsider their rankings after Jesuit’s Week 1 loss to now 1-1 Hebron.

Dropped out: 20. Ennis

Notable: South Oak Cliff beat Lancaster by three scores in a clash of top-five teams, Melissa beat 4A power/reigning state champ China Spring by 30 and Lovejoy smashed Argyle 42-14 as top area teams made early statements. Elsewhere, Frisco Emerson and Lake Dallas both improved to 2-0, looking to knock off Argyle, which finds itself in an unfamiliar 0-2 spot, in District 3-5AII. Justin Northwest cracked the top 20 for the first time after tight wins over Prosper Rock Hill and McKinney North to start the season, but reigning 5AI champion Aledo (which is just outside The Dallas Morning News’ coverage area, otherwise it would be in the conversation for area No. 1) awaits this weekend as league play begins for nine-team districts.

Notable: Anna blanked Aubrey 42-0, Celina used a monster second half to beat Bishop Lynch 77-41 and Carter beat Kimball 20-8 in the Oak Cliff Super Bowl to settle some early conversations about the top area 4A teams in Dallas. However, Carter visits Sunnyvale in Week 3, which could see the teams flip their rankings after Sunnyvale lost to 5A program Terrell 41-24.

Notable: There’s a new No. 1 team for the first time in what seems like half a decade. Parish Episcopal, winner of four straight TAPPS Div. I championships, started the season 0-2 with losses to Aledo (5AI) and Bellaire Episcopal (SPC). Argyle Liberty Christian beat Episcopal School of Dallas 31-0, avenging last year’s loss, as the Jason Witten-led program continues to turn heads.
